The bordermarkers of Llivia: 22-33

Bm22 (september 2005). It was a steep descent to this bordercross in the rivervalley and not easy to find in the rocky surrounding.

Bm22 (september 2005). Yet the very spot appeared to me logical: where a tiny stream coming from the hill to the north meets the 'borderriver' and forms a distinctive geophysical marking point.

Bm23 (june 2004)

Bm24 not found in 2005. Given the geophysical position of bm22 I searched for a similar spot for this anglepoint in the borderline.

Possible place of bordercross 24 (september 2005). There is a French sewage-cleaning installation, presumably just before the borderline. About 20 meters past the installation there is a little stream from the west entering the north-south stream. But no bordercross. I followed the stream southwards for several hunderd meters but to no result. Back home I read in de delimitation act: "Croix horizontale à 420 mètres (from bm23) sur la rive droite de la Ribera-dells-Valls, et à 25 mètres au-dessous du confluent des deux cours d'eau qui forment la Ribera". So: I should have looked more carefully 25 meter south from the merging of the two streams. By the way: this bordermarker is not indicated on the French IGN-maps.

But in september 2009 Martial Garcia did find bm24. According to him the marker is located a little bit after the confluent (merging of the 2 streams) but was covered with leaves and  moss.

Bm25 (september 2005)

Bordercross 26 not found in 2005. Is not indicated on the maps. The borderline difficult to establish with the map. The delimitation act however says: "Formant un angle de 162 degrés avec l'alignement des repères 23 et 25, à 405 mètres, passant par un massif de rochers appelé Bereta ou las Barretas, croix verticale regardant le Sud, sur une roche située au Prat-det-Pou, où commence le territoire d'Angoustrine.". I remember a group of great rocks in a field with horses, close to the dirtroad coming from the tarmac road to the north. This deserves a closer investigation.

But in september 2009 bm26 was found by Martial Garcia. He gave the following directions:
- coming from the east: he departed from camping La Griola along the road
- coming from bm27 (and 28): continue in the same direction for 100 meters, you'll see a meadow surrounded by an iron cable, follow the side parallel to the road and you will see the rock with marker 26

Bm27 not found in 2005. The delimitation act states: "A 102 mètres, sous un angle saillant de 169 degrés, croix sur une grande roche au Nord du Prat-del-Rey". So close (102 meter) to bordercross 26 there is (or was) bordercross 27, I guess to the west of the dirt road where more great boulders where situated. This bordermarker is also not indicated on the French IGN-maps.

But in september 2009 this bm was found by Martial Garcia. He gave the following directions:
- coming from bm28 follow during 150 meters a track parallel to the road, then you'll see two big boulders with a luggage rack thrown against and up the rock with the marker.

Bm27 in detail

Bm27: apparently this is the luggage rack ("porte bagage") Martial is talking about, thrown against and up the boulder.

Using Martial's directions and the distances mentioned in the delimitation act, we can make an approximate localisation of bm26 and 27. We have placemarks of bm28 and 25 to start from on Google Earth.

These localisations shown on a Google Earth printscreen.

Bm28 (september 2005)

Bm29 (september 2005). This bordercross is at the expected spot and according to the description in the delimitation act: "Sous un angle saillant de 145 degrés et à 71 mètres, croix sur la face supérieure et presque horizontale d'une très grande roche." But it doesn't seem very official. Strange.

But Martial Garcia gave the clue in 2009. The 'real' bordercross 29 is engraved on top of this boulder.

Bordercross 30 (september 2005). This bordermarker was very difficult to find. I surveyed the area extensively several times to no result. I was partly misleaded by this picture which shows a surrounding which I couldn't match with the actual situation. This old picture had the description "The boundarymarker 30, defined in the treaty as a cross, nowadays is a boundarymarker, as you can see on the pic". But then I realized that this was bordermarker 36 which I had found earlier.

I gave it a last try the next day, looking for a geophysically logical place. And so I stumbled on the bordercross where a nearly dry stream from the east enters the borderstream. I must have passed it several times before.

Bm31-french side (september 2005) with the llivian twin-stone in the background. The bordermarkers 31-34 are double along a wooded track. Interesting: the bm in the foreground has an A on it of the neighbouring French village Angoustrine. The brand new replacement stone in the background however has a T on it. Apparently a new municipality has been formed. In 2009 Martial Garcia informed me that the T stands for the municipality of Targasonne.

Bm31 - both markers (september 2009). Martial Garcia shows that also the 31A-marker has been replaced.
